Transcript: Chapter 1, Episode 11
Blaze holds his lighter high above his head and says, “On this side of the veil, you’re bound to the place you lived and the place you died. Until you can find the light, these are the only beacons you’ll see in the endless void.”
He moves the lighter in a circular motion as wisps, swirls, and sparks of energy rise around him. While the ghost charges away, Blaze continues, “This church witnessed your death and became your home.”
He draws a star-shaped sigil with the firelight and says, “But with my ritual, I give you a new beacon to follow.”
Light radiates from the flame, and Blaze says, “Your new home…”
He grabs the flame within his fist, extinguishing the light.
He holds out his hands, spiritual fire rising from both of his palms, and cries, “IS ME!” A blinding, sparkling starburst of light surrounds him.
The view goes pitch black. In the darkness, only Blaze glows bright. He stands behind the ghost and thinks, “Yes, that’s better. Now I’m the only one you can see.”
The ghost looks threateningly over his shoulder.
Blaze, wearing a cocky smirk, beckons with his finger and thinks, “Come and get it.”
The ghost charges at Blaze, fist raised, as Blaze stands ready. The tattered bottom hem of his trench coat billows.
Blaze catches the ghost by the shoulder and head.
Blaze pulls the ghost in so close that their lips almost touch.
Blaze releases a breath into the ghost’s mouth.
The ghost’s black pupils pin within white irises.
The ghost lunges forward, clamping his mouth over Blaze’s as Blaze lets out a grunt. A faint glow emanates from the union of their lips.
Blaze’s fingertips dig into the ghost’s shoulder.
In a flashback, Blaze lounges on his sofa. He wears a long-sleeved T-shirt with text partially obscured by his scarf. The top row of visible text reads “G-H-O-S,” and the bottom row reads, “W-H-O-R.” Below the text is a cartoon ghost with a wide, gaping, drippy mouth. The ghost a of a tuxedo cat lounges on the sofa’s back cushions. Blaze flippantly holds out a hand and asks Evie, “But what’s so bad about letting a spirit inhale your breath?”
Evie wears a serious expression as she replies, “Living breath is addictive. Irresistible fuel for a starved soul. And the smokier the ghost, the more compelling the lure.”
In present time, the ghost holds Blaze’s head in place while continuing to suck in his breath. His white irises are wide and intense. The memory of Evie’s warning continues, “Many a medium has tried using their breath to calm and control a spirit…”
Blaze squints up at the ghost in distress, his body beginning to weaken. His fingers dig into the ghost’s smoky form. Evie’s voice continues, “But they are playing with fire… hoping the spirit will fall still before their breath runs out.”
Blaze squeezes his eyes shut. Evie continues, “Miscalculate, and it’s all over.”
The ghost lowers Blaze onto the floor, still inhaling his breath. Evie says, “Because if a spirit wants more of your breath, they will take it.”
As Blaze’s hand slips from the ghost’s shoulder and falls limp, Evie warns, “And if you don’t have the strength left to stop them…”
Blaze’s hand lies still on the floor as Evie’s warning concludes, “Then you will become one of them.”
Fade to black.

And everything is going according to plan. Right, Blaze? Right, Blaze?
Y’all, there’s only ONE EPISODE LEFT of chapter 1!! We also have our final pet ghost cameo in this episode! Say hi to Elizyann’s Squook!
I can’t promise this author comment will be as articulate as usual. One of my condo neighbors had a gas leak today, and I’m only now getting over the headache, lol. Condo living sure is fun sometimes. On that subject, also make sure to eat when you’re supposed to eat, because gas leak headache/dizziness feels a whole lot like “forgot to eat” headache/dizziness, and it’s actually not great to have both of them in succession!
Happy October! We finished another month on Patreon (and… another month of our lives…), so that means we had some new ITS extras! I’ve been working on some hiatus art, and Secret Gallery patrons got early access along with behind-the-scenes/process shots and a gif!
Also, September was a quarterly sketch month, which means I drew a bunch of original sketches to mail out to my Sketch+Secret Gallery tier, but ALL tiers got to see the sketches. I DO have one slot open in the $20 Sketch+Secret Gallery Tier, and folks have until Friday to grab a slot and request a sketch! I think 5 ITS-themed sketches have yet to be claimed, since the others all got grabbed first. You can pledge here!
If you want a little preview of the aforementioned sketches, I have two of them up as the new TWC voting incentive! You also get a little bit of back story about them. (One of these two original sketches is still available to request on Patreon at the time I’m typing this.) It’s a new month – and early in the month – so votes are especially powerful in helping new readers discover Into the Smoke! You can vote here!
Just in time for spooky season, Into the Smoke is gonna be in a really fun Halloween bundle on itch.io that launches in about a week! The download of episodes 1-9 is free on itch, but buying it as part of the bundle not only gets you LOTS of other not-free comics at a seriously huge discount, but when Into the Smoke’s chapter 1 PDF is released in full with episode 12, you’ll still get it for free while everyone else will have to pay.
I’ll update this page when the listing goes live, but if you want to be sure to catch it, you can follow me on itch.io, and add Into the Smoke to your collection. Then you’ll get my bundle announcements by email and through itch!
With every new episode of chapter 1, I’m gonna shout out a creator and a comic that I recommend and think you’d enjoy.
This time, I’m recommending Ride or Die, by Mars Heyward!
Ride or Die is an LGBTQ webcomic about two street racers who team up with a demon-possessed muscle car in the search for a missing woman, while being hunted by a deadly religious cult.
Sorry I don’t have a prettier banner for this one, but you’ll just have to click the logo and discover for yourself that the artwork is *genius.* Absolutely A+ cartooning and one of those fluid, confident, deceptively effortless-looking styles I’m obsessed with. I think this is the only webcomic I’m recommending in this batch in which I’ve never actually interacted with the creator in any way, but I just really like this comic! Again, it’s exactly my favorite genre to both read and write (supernatural stuff with demons and creepy cults but also make it gay and fun), the leads are very cute together, there are some side characters I’m already super invested in, and I don’t think I’ve ever been so attached to a fictional car before. So go check it out!
